E-Scoring Tips in PlayHQ
So you're scorer this weekend. Firstly, thanks! Cricket relies on volunteers like you.
E-Scoring you'll be pleased to know is much easier than traditional scorebook scoring. But it's best to be prepared, and you do need to to pay attention to every ball bowled.
If you know cricket, then this page should really help. If you are brand new to cricket AND scoring, consider swapping your week and getting a bit more cricket knowledge as we can't cover the game rules and umpire signals here. See links at the bottom for more info.
There is a demo scenario environment of PlayHQ (Click here) that goes through A LOT of the edge cases of how this system deals with the curly events and is really useful to spend 15 minutes going through those more unusual events. PLEASE do this before it is your week!
To login to the e-scoring website, you will need a club-issued e-scorer login BEFORE the day. Ensure you have sorted this with your team manager or club official prior to game day!
To access the E-Scoring website, go to https://ca.score.playhq.com/ login, and choose the day, location and game you are scoring. Note that is a website, not an app that needs downloading.
Although e-scoring can be done on a phone, the screen size is challenging to follow the detail, so a tablet or laptop on a hot spot is recommended.
PlayHQ Cricket e-scoring is generally very intuitive. But you do have to make sure the correct batter is on strike and correct bowler is bowling in the system. This sounds simple, but kids and events can distract and cause a ripple effect if you miss something.
When you are e-scoring a game, ensure the RED Live indicator is lit, when it is not, your events aren't going online, check your internet connection (this has major implications if your scoring device fails).
If you look at PlayHQ e-scoring tutorials you may notice different screens layout slightly differently, particularly extras. So your device may not match the tutorial. PlayHQ has changed a little over the years also, so you may need to look a little harder for the button you are after.
The UNDO (back arrow) button is very helpful. To roll back one event or a few and correct a mistake. More than an over starts getting very hard to fix and disruptive to the game. So try to stay on it.
Wrong batter on strike. There are a few events like run outs and drinks breaks where the wrong batter according to PlayHQ is on strike. Click the active batter and choose Change Strike batter.
Wrong bowler chosen. You may need to undo some balls if you've just noticed. Click the current bowler and choose Change Bowler and replay any balls bowled. You can change a bowler mid over (injury).
Retire Out a batter. In Stage 2 the system automatically retires the batter at 35 balls (not incl wides). You can force retire a batter (injury/illness). Click the batter retiring and Retire Not out. Choose the new batter.
Sometimes an umpire will get a 7th delivery in, and if it's scoring/wicket before you can stop them, you may need to count it. Before you press End Over - Add Event and add the dot/run/wicket/extra.
In a Run Out the system assumes the facing batter is out (but of course it could be the non-striker), so has an option to change which batter is run out. Ensure you select the correct "out" batter.
This is the cause of most incorrect stats, and the longer you leave it to fix it, the harder it is. Try to check every ball the correct batter name is facing. Kids love their stats, so attributing them to the wrong player will have you in the bad books!
No Ball (plus runs) plus a run out. This is an occasional tough one. Tends to show up in Stage 1 more often. Generally you e-score in the order of events. No Ball then 2 byes etc..
This one, choose Wicket - Run Out - choose batter and fielder, then scroll down to Options underneath and add No Ball or No Ball + Runs (if they were going for the 2nd or 3rd run).
Wide and Run Out/Stumped/Hit Wicket is similar. Assign Wicket - Run Out/Stumped/Hit Wicket, then there's an Option below the wicket details to add a Wide extra.
A no ball that goes to the boundary without being hit (wayward) scores 1 no ball and 4 byes.
A wide that goes to the boundary scores 5 wides (you may need to "Edit Entry" on the running events right column to add extra wides to the event.)
If the e-scoring device freezes, overheats, battery flat. You can e-score on a secondary device, or scoring can continue in the scorebook and events can be added when a device is available.
Please note that if a secondary device takes over the primary device, the game’s score will always begin from where the primary device was last connected to the internet, which ISN'T always the previous delivery. This is WHY the association says secondary scorers should BOOK score, so no events are lost in a device failure. Secondary e-scoring should only take over from the primary scorer after a device failure.

If you are paper scoring in Stage 1, 2 or 3 cricket, then there are a couple of video guide here, based on the CA Stage 1,2,3 scorebooks mandated from our association.
